Vermont M. Coronel Jr. (b. Laguna, Philippines, 1985) studied Advertising at the Philippine Women’s University Bachelor of Fine Arts program. His practice has been widely attributed as street-based, informed by urban imagery and working in guerrilla fashion independently and together with the collective Pilipinas Street Plan. His first solo exhibitions “Spirit of a Place” and “Dream | World” in The Drawing Room Gallery shortlisted him in the 2012 and 2014 Ateneo Art Awards – a prestigious contemporary art distinction in the Philippines.
Coronel’s works in the commercial venue are stencil-based paintings, and sometimes he makes use of the stencil matrices themselves by framing these layers together to achieve the images. The images in his work comes from his daily immersion in cities, primarily Manila and Laguna. He is a recipient of the coveted Thirteen Artists Awards in 2015 granted triennially by the Cultural Center of the Philippines to young innovators in the arts
