Derek’s constant exploration of the digital medium and its technology has lead him to his current practice as an emerging multimedia artist that specializes in applying video mapped to sculptures and found objects. He treats video as a form of light which transfigures an object’s state or form, fluidly transforming it’s spatial nature. Light as an elusive medium challenges him to explore it’s possibilities, function and form to create art. Sculpture as an inanimate medium challenges him to use existing forms to create new visions. His works are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned.
