Hibi 日々

August 24 – September 21, 2024

Ryuki Mizuno’s images are simple yet detailed. Solid colors and straight shadows build upon each other to form scenes as if paused from an art film. One might say it embodies the kind of minimalism that Japanese are known for. However, what we see is much more complex than what is in front of us. That is exactly what the artist imparts with “hibi 日々” which means “everyday.” The character for the sun is repeated, hinting at a layering that both builds upon and obscures the scenes of daily life that we either take for granted, or occasionally appreciate for the mundane, unremarkable moments that somehow strike us in a moment of calm.
