Sulsi at Bastidor

August 24 – September 21, 2024

Raffy T. Napay

In the exhibition Sulsi at Bastidor (Mend and Frame / Mending and Framing), Napay pursues the idea of life or living and guidance or guiding. He is contemplating on being at the crossroad of evolution – witnessing both young and aging stages through his son and his parents. The shift in the mindset of being a parent has been a very personal artistic playground for him, drawing visual metaphors on the journey of providing for and directing a child into personhood. This phase in the journey is bittersweet as it also signals the maturing of his parents. Napay acknowledges this period as the sunset of lives well lived and cherishes how they have been constantly healing and forming him to be the person that he is.

“Taga-sulsi at Taga-bastidor” allegorizes experiences of having and being parents. Using multicolored threads that are manually sorted, the laborious layering on canvas represents hardships and joys in obligations of rearing. The vagueness in form encourages resonance and universality of message.
