No Thing Disappears into Nothingness

July 20 – August 17, 2024

When something is made, something is left out.

When scrap is “made”, it is always a result of another process.

In this exhibition, 12 Filipino artists have come together to create work with one word in mind: Scrap. How can scrap be reinterpreted, recontextualized, and remade into something new, something of value? What determines what even is valued? When considering “Scrap” we can find ourselves thinking of the old adage of “Another man’s trash…”. But scrap isn’t trash. Scrap is kept. Scrap are the things that we don’t value in the present, but something we know we will value in the future. A carpenter will keep a specifically measured offcut of wood, used to build his chair; hoping, praying, and pleading that that specific block of that specific size will be utilized in some future project. Some future contraption that requires a piece of wood of just that length and just that shape to complete something he has yet to even conceptualize.
