In Sirens (2024), Christina Lopez uses a machine learning framework called GAN (generative adversarial network) to make portraits of people who don’t exist, composite identities generated from hundreds of profile pictures of paid trolls* operating in the Philippines. Studies produced through an act of surveillance, these manufactured identities possess a superficial and unsettling authenticity. In this installation the digital portraits swarm and immerse the viewer, accompanied by multi-channel audio, reflecting the chaotic intensity of an online experience of trolling.
