I use a variety of images and references and intentionally tangled combination of techniques, putting all these complexities into simple pictorial forms. The idea of shapeshifting and folk stories significantly comes into the picture filtered through my cultural Filipino background. The depicted images move in and out of their signifying roles while they occupy various definitions and spaces. They can become landscapes, portraits and abstractions of pure color and form that coexist all at the same time. The different styles and contrasting textures try to create a cohesive space. The narrative can start to form as the viewer tries to separate shapes and define the individual forms in the painting. Ultimately, I want this interaction to highlight both the simple and complex nature of how we process visual stimuli, the physical and psychological spaces, and our flexible interpretation of both.
