ABOUT THE ARTIST

France-based Gaston Damag’s roots is the indigenous Ifugao, and he relates this to his investigation of the canonical representation of ethnographic objects. He is noted for fusing ethnographic symbols of his material culture in the Cordillera region in the Northern Philippines along with diverse modern industrial materials such as steel, glass and neon lights to address the ways a non-western ethnic culture can navigate around a cultural perspective dominated by the West. He has been featured in major exhibitions such as the Thessaloniki Biennale in Greece, the Dexia Banque Internationale, Luxemborg, Miam Museum in Sete and Topaz Arts Center in New York.
